Intervista a Mehiwm: l'Arte dell'illustrazione e del Tattoo

In occasione della mostra internazionale HUMANITY che si terrà a Firenze dal 3 al 10 Maggio 2024 presso il Museo Bellini, conosciamo meglio gli artisti selezionati per questo evento dallo storico e critico d'arte Francesca Callipari.

1) BENVENUTA AD ILOVEITALY NEWS, SIAMO MOLTO FELICI DI INCONTRARTI … RACCONTACI DI TE, QUANDO NASCE LA TUA PASSIONE PER L'ARTE E QUAL' è STATO IL TUO PERCORSO DI FORMAZIONE?

MEHIWM: Ciao, grazie mille per questa intervista, il piacere è condiviso! Mi chiamo Mehiwm, ho 21 anni e sono completamente autodidatta. Sono cresciuta tra le montagne della Savoia in Francia e Giulianova in Abruzzo, in Italia. I miei antenati erano rifugiati italiani, quindi la lingua e la cultura italiana hanno sempre fatto parte della mia vita dall'infanzia fino ad oggi. Disegno da quando ricordo, anche prima che potessi camminare. Naturalmente questa passione mi ha accompagnato durante tutto il percorso scolastico. Trovavo le lezioni troppo facili, mi annoiavo e ho subito molte molestie a causa dei miei buoni voti e del bilinguismo. Di conseguenza, l'arte è diventata una fuga e poi una ragione di vita.

Quando avevo 14 anni ho deciso di abbandonare la scuola, di lasciarmi quell'inferno alle spalle, per dedicare tutta la mia vita all'arte. È stata una scommessa molto rischiosa, ma la libertà non ha prezzo. A 15 anni esposi per la prima volta, ricevendo elogi da un deputato politico e da tanti artisti professionisti, e fui lanciata. Tuttavia, durante la crisi sanitaria (COVID-19), il mercato dell'arte ha subito un duro colpo e non ero più sicura di nulla. Senza alcun diploma, mi sono arruolata nell'esercito. In brevissimo tempo mi ritrovai al quartier generale. Anche se avevo già un futuro chiaro in questo campo, mi sono resa conto che mi mancava la mia libertà artistica.

Rapidamente, "Impossible is not Mehiwm", ho lasciato tutto alle spalle per ricominciare da zero nel mondo dell'arte durante la crisi sanitaria. Da allora, sono determinata a denunciare le cause che mi stanno a cuore, nonché ad affrontare argomenti difficili e persino tabù attraverso l'arte, cercando di fare la differenza. Voglio aiutare quante più persone possibile, portando loro speranza e resilienza e lasciando un segno per le generazioni future.

2) IN QUESTA OCCASIONE PARTECIPERAI IN VIDEOESPOSIZIONE CON UNA OPERA DI GENERE FIGURATIVO, DAL TITOLO "PRINCESSE DES MARAIS". UN'OPERA DI FORTE IMPATTO VISIVO CHE CI CONDUCE VERSO SIGNIFICATI NASCOSTI, INCENTIVANDO UNA RIFLESSIONE. COM'E' NATA L'IDEA PER QUEST'OPERA E COSA VORRESTI TRASMETTESSE A CHI LA OSSERVA?

MEHIWM: Quest'opera d'arte raffigura una donna bionda con gli occhi chiusi, circondata da fiori blu, con una rana appollaiata sulla spalla, il tutto su uno sfondo nero. Questa composizione artistica contemporanea evoca un'atmosfera misteriosa e intrigante. Tracciando un collegamento con gli attuali conflitti di guerra, quest'opera d'arte può essere interpretata come una rappresentazione simbolica della sofferenza e del trauma causati dalla violenza e dai conflitti armati in tutto il mondo. La donna con gli occhi chiusi simboleggia la cecità alla realtà dei conflitti, i fiori blu rappresentano la speranza, la bellezza della vita, ma anche la fragile pace in un ambiente oscuro e minaccioso, mentre la rana sulla sua spalla evoca il concetto di trasformazione e resilienza in risposta alle avversità. Quest'opera d'arte contemporanea invita a una profonda riflessione sulle conseguenze degli attuali conflitti di guerra e sulla necessità di trovare percorsi verso la riconciliazione e la pace.

3) HUMANITY HA COME SCOPO QUELLO DI STIMOLARE I VISITATORI A RITROVARE LE PROPRIE EMOZIONI PIU' RECONDITE, A RIFLETTERE SUI VALORI E SU QUELLA UMANITà CHE LENTAMENTE STIAMO PERDENDO IN UNA SOCIETà ALIENANTE CHE CI PORTA SEMPRE PIù VERSO L'INDIFFERENZA, QUALI SONO I TUOI PENSIERI A RIGUARDO? PENSI CHE L'ARTE POSSA AIUTARE QUALE STRUMENTO DI RACCOGLIMENTO INTERIORE E DI RINASCITA?

MEHIWM: L'arte è un linguaggio universale; non è necessario essere bilingue per capirlo. Quindi sì, credo che l'arte svolga un ruolo importante ed essenziale nella nostra società. L'arte ci permette di trasmettere emozioni, trasmettere messaggi importanti, ecc. Può essere utilizzata come mediatore. È anche un mezzo per difendere valori agli occhi della maggioranza e aiuta anche a mitigare le idee estremiste di alcuni individui.

4) SOGNI O PROSSIMI PROGETTI IN PROGRAMMA?

MEHIWM: Illustrare un fumetto, pubblicare un libro d'arte e, soprattutto, continuare a denunciare cause attraverso l'arte per cercare di fare la differenza alla mia scala. Mi piacerebbe fare qualcosa legato alla lotta al bullismo scolastico. Forse una mostra o il lavoro con un'associazione, gruppi di genitori, ecc. E anche fare qualcosa per le malattie mentali, magari collaborando con una clinica o un ospedale psichiatrico, perché sono ancora tante le persone che nutrono pregiudizi dannosi su questo argomento. Sono stata uno di quei pazienti per gran parte della mia adolescenza e posso assicurarti che l'arte ha davvero qualcosa di positivo da offrire loro.

1) WELCOME TO ILOVEITALY NEWS, WE ARE VERY HAPPY TO MEET YOU... TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF, WHEN WAS YOUR PASSION FOR ART BORN AND WHAT WAS YOUR TRAINING COURSE?

MEHIWM: Hello, thank you very much for this interview, the pleasure is shared !

My name is Mehiwm, I'm 21 years old, and I'm completely self-taught. I grew up between the mountains of Savoie in France and Giulianova in the Abruzzo region of Italy.

My ancestors were Italian refugees, so the Italian language and culture have always been part of my life from childhood until now. I've been drawing for as long as I can remember, even before I could walk. Naturally, this passion has accompanied me throughout my schooling. I found the classes too easy, I was bored, and I experienced a lot of harassment because of my good grades and bilingualism. Consequently, art became an escape, and then a reason to live.

When I was 14 years old, I decided to drop out of school, leave that hell behind, in order to dedicate my entire life to art. It was a very risky bet, but freedom is priceless.

At 15, I exhibited for the first time, receiving praise from a political deputy as well as many professional artists, and I was launched.

However, during the health crisis (COVID-19), the art market really took a hit, and I was no longer sure of anything. Without any diplomas, I joined the army. In a very short time, I found myself at headquarters. Even though I already had a clear future in this field, I realized that I missed my artistic freedom.

Quickly, "Impossible is not Mehiwm," so I left everything behind again to start from scratch in the art world during the health crisis.

Since then, I have been determined to denounce causes that are close to my heart, as well as to tackle difficult and even taboo subjects through art, trying to make a difference on my own scale. I want to help as many people as possible by bringing them hope and resilience, and to leave a mark for future generations.

2) ON THIS OCCASION YOU WILL PARTICIPATE IN A VIDEO EXHIBITION WITH A FIGURATIVE WORK, TITLED "PRINCESSE DES MARAIS". A WORK WITH A STRONG VISUAL IMPACT WHICH LEAD US TO HIDDEN MEANINGS, ENCOURAGING REFLECTION. HOW WAS THE IDEA FOR THIS WORK BORN AND WHAT WOULD YOU WISH IT TO TRANSMIT TO THOSE WHO OBSERVE IT?

MEHIWM: This artwork depicts a blonde woman with closed eyes, surrounded by blue flowers, with a frog perched on her shoulder, all against a black background. This contemporary artistic composition evokes a mysterious and intriguing atmosphere. By drawing a connection with current conflicts of war, this artwork can be interpreted as a symbolic representation of the suffering and trauma caused by violence and armed conflicts worldwide. The woman with closed eyes symbolizes blindness to the reality of conflicts, the blue flowers represent hope, the beauty of life, but also the fragile peace in a dark and threatening environment, while the frog on her shoulder evokes the notion of transformation and resilience in the face of adversity. This contemporary artwork invites deep reflection on the consequences of current conflicts of war and the necessity of finding paths towards reconciliation and peace.

3) HUMANITY HAS THE PURPOSE OF STIMULATING VISITORS TO FIND THEIR MOST INSIDE EMOTIONS, TO REFLECT ON THE VALUES AND THAT HUMANITY THAT WE ARE SLOWLY LOSING IN AN ALIENANT SOCIETY AND WHICH DRIVES US MORE AND MORE TOWARDS INDIFFERENCE, WHAT ARE YOURS THOUGHTS ABOUT IT? DO YOU THINK ART CAN HELP AS A TOOL FOR INTERNAL COLLECTION AND REBIRTH?

MEHIWM: Art is a universal language; it is not necessary to be bilingual to understand it. So yes, I believe that art plays a major and essential role in our society. Art allows us to convey emotions, convey important messages, etc. It can be used as a mediator. It is also a means of advocating values in the eyes of the majority and also helps to temper the extremist ideas of some individuals.

4) DREAMS OR NEXT SCHEDULED PROJECTS?

MEHIWM: Illustrating a comic book, publishing an art book, and above all, continuing to denounce causes through art to try to make a difference on my own scale. I would love to do something related to the fight against school bullying. Perhaps an exhibition, or working with an association, parents' groups, etc.

And also doing something about mental illnesses, maybe working with a clinic or psychiatric hospital, because there are still many people who hold harmful prejudices on this subject. I was one of those patients for much of my adolescence, and I can assure you that art truly has something positive to offer them.
